Iranian Clerics Declare Ahmadinejed Re-Election Illegitimate
TEHRAN - An influential group of Iranian clerics took sides late Saturday, calling June's re-election of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, and by extension his government, illegitimate. On Sunday, Tehran released a British-Greek journalist who had been writing for the Washington Times when he was detained around June 19, even as the son of a revolutionary icon called for Ahmedinejad's government to be dissolved. Foreign Ministry spokesman Hasan Qashqavi said that Iason Athanasiadis, believed to be the only journalist held in the widespread crackdown who does not hold Iranian citizenship, had been released in the framework of "Tehran-Athens ties." There were no details on Athanasiadis' current location. The Association of Researchers and Teachers of Qom, Iran's holiest city, questioned whether the Guardian Council, Iran's official electoral watchdog, had enough authority to validate the disputed election results, the Voice of America and the New York Times reported... The group called on other clerics to oppose the election results and Ahmadinejad's government, even calling the estimated 20 people killed in the past three weeks' protests as "martyrs" comparable to the thousands who died during the 1979 Iranian revolution and the 1980-1988 war with Saddam Hussein's Iraq. Qom, about 100 miles southwest of Tehran, is the spiritual heart of Iranian Shiite Islam and was the power base of the Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, later the leader of the revolution, before he was exiled by the shah in 1964... Police say more than a thousand people have been detained in total and 20 "rioters" killed during the violence. Eight members of the paramilitary Basij militia tasked with putting down the protests have also been killed. Some human rights groups have raised concerns that people detained in the postelection turmoil could be forced into making bogus confessions under torture or other duress.
Ex-Iranian "Secret Jews" Gather
by Hillel Fendel
JERUSALEM - A conference of descendants of 19th-century Iranian Jews forced to convert to Islam and live as secret Jews will convene in Jerusalem on Monday. The newly formed Global Mashadi Jewish Federation will officially be launched on Monday, July 6th, with its first-ever conference in Jerusalem. Three generations of Mashadi were forced to live as secret Jews in the 19th and 20th centuries, after having been forced to “convert” to Islam by their Iranian neighbors. The forced conversions occurred during the period known as “Allah-Dadi,” beginning in 1839 and lasting almost a century. For more information on the community, visit www.mashadirabbi.com/. The mission of the new federation, founded by Mr. Bahman Kamali, is to ensure the survival of the Mashadi heritage and preserve it in all locations where Mashadis live. Mashad is Iran’s second largest city and capital of an important province in the northeast region of the country. With the establishment of the State of Israel, many Mashadi Jews immigrated to the Jewish State, and today nearly 15,000 of them live in Israel, comprising the world's largest Mashadi community. Additional communities were established in New York, Hamburg, London and Milan. "By strengthening our global ties, we are working towards promoting the survival of our Mashadi heritage as well as Judaism overall,” Kamali said. “This is a group with a particularly unique history and series of traditions that we are proud to embrace, and this gathering will give us the chance to so here in Jerusalem, the center of the Jewish world.” The day-long conference will be held at the Jerusalem Sheraton Plaza hotel, attended by leaders and individuals from the Mashadi Jewish communities worldwide. It will cover topics such as the alarming assimilation of the Iranian Jewish Community in the United States and Italy, a reaffirmation of the Mashadi traditions, and the creation of a Mashadi archive museum documenting Mashadi history, books and artifacts.
Doctor kidnapped in forced marriage plot: 'I thought I was going to die'
Humayra Abedin, who was abducted, drugged and held captive by her family in Bangladesh in order to get her to marry a complete stranger, speaks for the first time
LONDON - A DOCTOR from east London who was held hostage in a forced marriage plot has spoken for the first time about her harrowing four-month ordeal. Humayra Abedin was kidnapped, beaten and drugged by her family in Bangladesh last year. The 33-year-old, who at the time was training to be a doctor at Whipps Cross Hospital, was freed last December after lawyers from the UK and Bangladesh convinced a court in the south Asian country to demand her release. Seven months after returning to the UK, Abedin said of her ordeal: "What they did to me was a complete abuse." The torture began last August after she was duped into flying to the country after being told by distant relatives that her mother was ill. Little did she know that she was to become a victim of her family's scheme. Abedin told the Independent on Sunday about the moment she was abducted: "My face was covered with a piece of cloth by men who told me they were policemen, before they carried me out into an ambulance which was parked outside the house. "They held my arms and legs, carried me like a prisoner, while my parents stood in the background."
On the request of her family, Abedin was driven to a private hospital. Her kidnappers stopped her screaming by holding her down and gagging her. "This was the first time I thought, 'This is it. I am dying'," said Abedin. "I begged them to stop." Every morning and night for three months, she was forced to swallow dangerously high doses of powerful tranquillisers. Abedin was kept a prisoner in her hospital, goaded at by staff and relatives, and was denied contact with the outside world. She says: "After three months of medication, verbal abuse, emotional blackmail, my mind was weakened. I felt like a puppet. I had lost all hope and had no more energy to fight back. "These people [the doctors] are meant to be health professionals, but what they did to me was a complete abuse. This I will never forgive or forget." Her parents told her the only way she could end her ordeal was to give up her life in England and marry a Muslim stranger they picked for her. She refused. *Continued>>

Reformists resist Iranian government pressure
TEHRAN, Iran — The son of an Iranian revolutionary icon called on parliament to dismiss president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad from his post, as the country's conservative political establishment upped pressure Sunday on the reformists. Ali Reza Beheshti, 47, a close Mousavi ally and son of one of the main leaders of the 1979 Islamic revolution, urged the parliament to reverse the election results, saying that "people expect their representatives to represent them and not to defend authorities by any means." "I wish the lawmakers would respect the demands of the majority of their constituents" and submit a bill disqualifying the president, Beheshti was quoted as saying on the pro-Mousavi Web site, Norooznews. Beheshti, who ran Mousavi's now-banned Kalemeh newspaper, is the younger son of Ayatollah Mohammad Hossein Beheshti, Iran's top judge who was killed in a bombing in 1981. Iran's leadership has been grappling with how to handle fallout from the elections, which critics maintain President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad won by fraud. On Sunday, the conservative Kayhan newspaper ran its second consecutive editorial targeting Mousavi and his backers, dubbing them as dangerous in comments highlighting the government's predicament. "How should the Islamic Republic treat such groups? They would be a dangerous opposition if they were to win, and set the streets on fire if they lose," said Sunday's editorial. "The meaning of such behaviors is that they do not accept the system," or Islamic republic. A day earlier, the paper ran another editorial by Ayatollah Ali Khamenei's top aide that accused Mousavi of being an American agent and suggested he be tried for treason...

"Documentary" blames "the British and Israeli Secret Services" for 7/7
Jihad Watch
This is no surprise: again and again we have seen Muslim spokesmen disclaim responsibility for any wrongdoing of any kind.
UK - This isn't even anything new. Right after the 7/7 bombings, jihadist Omar Bakri said that there was no proof that the bombers were Muslim, and his partner in crime Anjem Chaudary said that Britain was behind the bombings.... The documentary alleges that the four British Muslims were tricked by the authorities into taking part in what they were told would be a mock anti-terror training exercise. What they weren't told, the video alleges, was that the Government was going to blow them up, along with other passengers, then pretend the four were suicide bombers...

Gaza: Hamas imposes 'Koran levy'
Salaries of public officials in Strip to be cut in effort to reinforce Koran study centers
GAZA - Special Hamas tax: The Hamas government in Gaza has recently decided to cut the salaries of Palestinian Authority employees in the Strip in order to finance Koran studies. In an effort to reinforce Koran study centers across Gaza, Hamas has decided to deduct one percent of the salaries of public officials in the Strip and earmark the funds to the Koran schools. Notably, Korean study centers in the Strip are considered a major Hamas power source used to elicit support for the organization. Dr. Taleb Abu Sha'r, the Minister for Religious Affairs in the Hamas government, said the decision aims to encourage Koran studies and religious devotion. "The decision proves that the government attaches great importance to those who teach and study the Koran, and it expresses a desire to assist them," he said. The new "Koran levy" is not the only unusual tax introduced by Hamas in the Gaza Strip. Every few months, the Hamas government enforces a deduction in the salaries of each public official in order to pay unemployment allowances in the Strip. (The Religion of Peace)
UK: Muslim dentist who forced his patients to wear Islamic dress can carry on

Jihad Watch
UK - A dentist who told Muslim patients he would treat them only if they wore Islamic dress will be able to continue to practise, a disciplinary panel ruled today. Dr Omer Butt, of Prestwich, Greater Manchester, ordered two women to wear head scarfs before he would see them and their families, the professional conduct committee of the General Dental Council (GDC) found. The panel concluded that he sought to impose a dress code on Muslim patients while working at the Unsworth Smile Clinic in Bury, Greater Manchester, between April 2005 and June 2007. Dr Butt "discriminated" against people on the basis he "disapproved of their attitude to the requirements of Islam" and "did not act in the best interests of his patients", the panel found. The GDC committee said it was "in no doubt that it amounted to misconduct" but found his fitness to practise was not impaired....

Palestinians burned holy Jewish books at Homesh
Dozens of Talmuds, bibles, prayer books defaced at unauthorized yeshiva located in evacuated West Bank settlement; Minister Edelstein demands permanent structure, adequate protection for Jewish students
JERUSALEM - Police suspect that Palestinians defaced and burned holy books at a yeshiva located on the grounds of the evacuated West Bank settlement of Homesh. "The sight was awful," the yeshiva’s dean, Rabbi Elishamah Cohen, told Ynet. “Dozens of holy books – Talmuds, bibles, and prayer books – were almost completely burned.” Police have launched an investigation, but no perpetrators have been detained as of yet. Homesh was evacuated during Israel's unilateral withdrawal from parts of the West Bank in the summer of 2005. Since then, right-wing activists have made repeated attempts to rebuild the settlement, and every once in a while IDF forces arrive at the site to evacuate them. About a dozen people have returned to Homesh to live and study in a wooden structure housing a yeshiva. Several weeks ago, security forces destroyed the yeshiva, but students have made use of a remaining courtyard of one of the homes destroyed during the Disengagement. It is suspected that Palestinians raided the yeshiva while its students were visiting the nearby settlement Shavei Shomron. "It is evident that the Arabs who torched the holy books did so meticulously," said Rabbi Cohen. "The books were almost completely charred. We managed to salvage a few pages." Yossi Dagan of Homesh First, the grassroots group planning to rebuild the West Bank settlement, said "we demand that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu order the establishment of a large, official settlement in Homesh. This should be the government's response to this national humiliation." Minister of Information and Diaspora Yuli Edelstein (Likud) called on the government to erect a permanent structure that will house the yeshiva and see to it that the students are protected "so that such severe anti-Semitic incidents will not repeat themselves".
